Social Network Analytics: Beyond the Obvious

At present, there is considerable excitement in analyzing and harnessing large graphs, in particular social and information networks. This is spurred by numerous applications including viral marketing, epidemiology, spread of innovation, social event organization, and event detection and tracking, to name a few from various domains. Unprecedented availability of network and social media data has invigorated research in social network / media analytics but also places huge computational challenges before us. In this talk, I will present some key problems touching on these diverse applications and discuss the solutions developed in our group. I will conclude by sketching an agenda for future work in this exciting area. This is joint work with several colleagues, grad students, and postdocs, who will be acknowledged in the talk.
